Spruce and Maple - Available on CD
Edwin’s music centers on tone, storytelling, and blend—qualities that are realized in his debut album, Maple and Spruce.
Featuring bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Charles Goold, the trio achieves a warm, acoustic sound where Luke’s distinctive lines and Charles’s sensitive flair intertwine with Edwin’s soulful ideas and delicate touch. His playing bridges past and present: honoring traditional jazz language and acoustic sensibilities while embracing modern lyricism and a spirit of discovery.
To preserve the immediacy of first encounters, Maple and Spruce was recorded without prior rehearsal. Many of the tracks are first takes, capturing a loose, spontaneous energy. Recorded in the Juilliard recording studio, the session felt more like a live performance than a studio date—the musicians’ close setup fostered natural interaction and a vibrant, unprocessed sound.
The album features some of Edwin’s favorite melodies, including seldom-heard gems like Jubilation by Junior Mance, The Mooche by Duke Ellington, and Lotus Blossom by Billy Strayhorn. On Stardust, vocalist Kate Kortum joins the trio, showcasing an intimate, intuitive dialogue between guitar and voice. The album also includes Edwin’s arrangement of Butterfly Lovers, reimagining the iconic Chinese violin concerto through the lens of jazz and exploring the possibilities of cultural fusion. Live in-studio video recordings of every track will be released on YouTube after the album’s debut.
